Abstract
115 words
A number of constraints exists in cassava production in Uganda. These include diseases, pests, weeds and socio-economic factors. The most serious disease problem being the African cassava mosaic disease (ACMV). This is not a new disease in Uganda. It was first reported in East Africa in 1894 and later found widespread in Uganda.
A vigorous breeding campaign initiated by East African Community generated a number of lines resistant to mosaic.
These varieties were transferred and evaluated in different parts of Uganda. This programme resulted in the recommendation and release of masaic resistant varieties as Bukalasa, and Bukalasa 11 plus others. There followed a period of vigorous campaigns, multiplication and distribution of resistant varieties to farmers.
